TIARMA SIRAIT
Overview Works CV
BIOGRAPHY
Tiarma Sirait is a Bandung-based visual artist and fashion innovator whose interdisciplinary practice blurs the boundaries between painting, textile, installation, fashion, and performance. Widely known for her provocative and visually bold works, she offers a dynamic critique of cultural conventions, gender norms, mass consumerism, and the fusion of Eastern and Western traditions. With a career spanning over three decades, Tiarma has become a highly influential figure in the contemporary art world, both in Indonesia and internationally.

Her artistic journey began at an early age. As a junior high school student, she studied painting under the mentorship of Indonesian master Barli Sasmitawinata. This early exposure to classical training provided a strong technical foundation that she later combined with a rebellious, forward-thinking aesthetic. In 1994, she graduated from the Faculty of Art & Design at the prestigious Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), majoring in Textile Design. Tiarma continued her academic pursuits internationally, studying Fashion Design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia and later receiving a STINT scholarship to complete a Master’s degree in Fashion and Textile Design at the University of Borås, Sweden.

In 1997, she founded her independent creative space, Poleng Studio, which has since become a hub for contemporary expression and experimentation. Through Poleng Studio, Tiarma not only creates her own art but also mentors young designers and artists through internships, workshops, and collaborative projects.

Tiarma’s body of work is characterized by its audacity—both visually and conceptually. Since the late 1990s, she has adopted the color pink as her artistic signature, utilizing pink plastics and synthetic furs to evoke sensations of artificiality, flamboyance, and contradiction. For Tiarma, pink is more than a color; it is a symbol of femininity, excess, irony, and transformation. Her works explore themes such as lust and love, cultural displacement, identity politics, and the chaotic effects of globalization on contemporary life.

Combining painting, photography, sculpture, and wearable art, Tiarma has developed a highly original voice that merges pop culture references with Indonesian traditional motifs. Since 2014, she has been deeply engaged in the exploration of batik within her paintings, using the technique as both cultural homage and contemporary reinvention. Over the years, her work has been exhibited in more than 400 exhibitions, festivals, and biennales across the globe. Her exhibition history includes showings in major international art hubs such as France, Italy, Germany, Australia, China, India, the United States, and the United Kingdom. She has also brought her distinctive style to emerging art scenes in countries such as Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Myanmar, and Venezuela.

Tiarma’s artistic excellence has earned her over 50 prestigious awards and honors, including:

Gold Medal, Palette International Art & Photography Competition (2025)
World Artist Top 10, BIEAF 'Change to ECO' Korea (2024)
The World Platinum Senior Artist Award, India (2023)
Winner, 4th Watercolor Biennale “Awaiting New Despair”, Lithuania (2023)
Michelangelo Awards, Rainbow Art World (2022)
Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci Awards for Excellence in Painting (2021)
Finalist, Gudang Garam Indonesia Art Award (2015)
Selected Photographer, Architecture Collection @ The Louvre Museum, Paris (2015)
Permanent Collection, Olympic Fine Arts Museum, China (2008)
Winner, Concours International des Jeunes Createurs de Mode @ Carrousel du Louvre, Paris (2002)

Her accolades also include recognitions from the governments and institutions of Korea, India, France, and China, affirming her as an artist whose work resonates far beyond the borders of Indonesia.

Tiarma's contributions to culture extend beyond her own creative output. She actively promotes the growth of Indonesia’s artistic landscape, especially in the fields of fashion and textile design. Through lectures, writings, performances, exhibitions, and creative forums, she encourages artistic dialogue and cross-cultural understanding. Her passion lies in using art as a tool for expression, communication, and social engagement.

In 2013, she was honored among "10 Women in Culture" who have successfully brought international recognition to Indonesia’s creative industries. She has been featured in publications such as Australia Unlimited Magazine (2011), and her influence has been recognized by art foundations and curatorial groups worldwide.

Tiarma’s creative vision is inseparable from her identity as a woman and Indonesian artist living in a globalized era. Her works often challenge patriarchal structures and highlight the fluidity of identity, celebrating hybridity and eccentricity. Through her performances and wearable art, she transforms herself into a living canvas—an evolving symbol of resistance, celebration, and personal mythology.

Despite her international acclaim, Tiarma remains deeply rooted in Bandung, where she continues to work passionately from Poleng Studio. Her mission is clear: to contribute to the diversity and dynamism of Indonesian art by cultivating innovation and supporting the next generation of artists and designers. With a distinctive visual language and a career filled with groundbreaking accomplishments, Tiarma Sirait is not only a trailblazing artist but also a vital cultural ambassador for Indonesia. Her legacy is one of fearless creativity, intellectual rigor, and a lifelong commitment to reimagining what art can be.
